The finish of the pickguard is so dark that it will appear black, so I don't think it will look tacky at all. When I saw the word 'wood' in your question, I sort of cringed because I was imagining a lighter wood finish through which you could see the grain. But the one in your link seems appropriate and will complement the gold hardware and black bridge nicely.

I would suggest getting a cheaper guitar for learning...that way if, for whatever reason, you absolutely hate it, you aren't stuck with a huge investment...and definitely look used, whether you're looking for a vintage or not, as it will save you a ton of money. Just check pawn shops, music stores, ads, etc. for a good deal, and try to play as many as possible before you buy. Good luck and have fun!

It's not supposed to be a Gibson, so if you're complaining that it's not anatomically correct as a Gibson Explorer, you should stop. But if you're complaining about the fact that it looks like a Gibson Explorer, you should be open-minded and listen to some metal.

Stick with whatever feels right to you. One of my friends is a baseball player who pitches with his right hand even though he's usually left handed.

Fun fact: Jimi Hendrix strung his guitars backwards and played them upside down because they didn't have left handed guitars back then : )

Sorry I'm not really much of a help with guitar brands but I have a Carlo Robelli acoustic bass guitar. Another one of my friends has a Gibson Les Paul and he loves it. He plays a lot of Van Halen and AC/DC, stuff like that.

I hope this was helpful : )

My brother and one of my dear friends are lefty's and play on a right handed guitar and bass. It seems that right handed axes are easier to find then left handed ones and it's always good to know the right handed guitar b/c if you get called on stage to sit in for a song or two, they might not have a left handed axe!
I have that issue with 5 string basses. I only play 4 strings and sometimes I can't sit in with the band to play unless the bass player unhooks his 5 string to hook up the 4 string...I am gonna learn the 5 string so that I can "jump" in anytime they call me up there! :)

as far as brand I prefer Fenders myself. But Les Paul are nice guitars too so is the Musicman guitars. But Fenders rock in my book! As far as the sound, it also depends on the guitar and the pedals you have to get that "metal sound". If you get a cheap guitar, the pick ups on it are cheap and you get what you pay for. Good luck!

Hello, I have been playing guitar for over 15 years now. I have reviewed several online guitar sites. There is one that I highly recommend to all inspiring players and for good reason. It is very affordable, you can usually get it even cheaper than normal. The information that you get for the price is amazing. You also get several bonuses that will come in handy during learning. Here is the link to the site, you can have a closer look and see how this is by far one of the best programs. Good luck!

I started using a 3-DVD/book set called "Learn Rock Guitar" a couple months ago (after playing guitar for more than 20 years) and I'm amazed at how much I'm learning. It's geared toward metal guitarists, but would be perfect for anyone who wants to play electric guitar. It starts with the very basics -- tuning, how to hold a pick, how to strum -- and takes you through everything you'll need to know to play intricate solos. The whole set only costs $40 at Musician's Friend, even though it has more information than you'd glean from years of private guitar lessons. It's extremely good stuff. Here's a link:
